Basel, 23 June 2003 – The Board of Directors of the Swiss Bankers Association
(SBA) today acknowledged with regret Georg Krayer’s decision to resign as Chairman and unanimously elected
Pierre Mirabaud as his successor. The Board of Directors expressed its thanks to Georg Krayer for all
his work on behalf of the Swiss financial centre.
Georg Krayer
announced his decision to resign as Chairman at a meeting of the SBA’s Board of Directors today in Zurich.
The Board thereupon unanimously elected Pierre Mirabaud as the SBA’s new Chairman. Pierre Mirabaud (born
1948) is Senior Partner with Mirabaud & Cie., private bankers of Geneva, and is a well-known and
highly-regarded figure in the Swiss financial world. He was elected a member of the SBA’s Board of Directors
in March this year. Pierre Mirabaud will take over the chairmanship of the SBA after confirmation of
his election on Swiss Bankers’ Day on 19 September in Lucerne.
The SBA’s
Board of Directors expressed its thanks to Georg Krayer for all the work he has done on behalf of the
Swiss financial centre during his 11 years as Chairman. This period witnessed several major challenges
to Swiss banks as well as a changing financial landscape, such as the property crisis of the early 1990s,
structural changes following the merger of banking giants Swiss Bank Corporation and the old UBS, problems
connected with dormant accounts as well as constant pressure from various quarters on bank client confidentiality.
Speaking on behalf of the SBA’s Board of Directors, Pierre Mirabaud praised Georg Krayer’s achievements:
“His great personal commitment, combined with his professional knowledge, his feeling for politics and
his humour, allowed Georg Krayer to solve problems to the benefit of the Swiss financial centre and
Switzerland as a whole.”
The SBA’s Board of Directors is convinced that
with private banker Pierre Mirabaud it has elected a Chairman who stands for both continuity and dynamism.
Thanks to his comprehensive professional know-how, his many years’ experience in a successful private
bank, his position as a well-known member of the Swiss financial establishment and his open and communicative
manner, Pierre Mirabaud fulfils all the requirements of the job in an ideal way.
Pierre
Mirabaud thanked the Board for the confidence it has expressed in him and stressed that he would devote
all his energies to promoting Switzerland as a strong and dynamic financial centre. He added that continuity
- which also meant reliability - was of enormous importance to the banking industry. He said he would
work particularly hard for further improvement of professional training in the banking sector, for a
moderate extension of regulation as well as for the maintenance of financial privacy, and added that
he was especially keen on conducting an open and transparent dialogue with all interested parties.
